Έχει μαλλιάσει η γλώσσα μου χρόνια τώρα να λέω ότι στον SQL Server δεν υπάρχουν θέσφατα, αξιώματα και κανόνες. Υπάρχουν συνθήκες και με βάση αυτές και την γνώση της αρχιτεκτονικής του SQL Server (και για αυτό έχει μαλλιάσει η γλώσσα μου) μπορείς να δώσεις απαντήσεις και λύσεις σε ότι και να σου συμβεί.

Από την άλλη μου αρέσει όταν με ρωτάνε διάφορα να τους δείχνω τέτοια σενάρια. Ακόμα καλύτερα μου αρέσει να έχει συμβεί κάποιο αυτά τα περίεργα και να έρχονται να με ρωτήσουν. Μια τέτοια περίπτωση είχα σήμερα στο γραφείο.

Έρχεται ένας συνάδελφος και μου λέει το εξής:

«Σε ένα πίνακα όταν έχω clustered index τα δεδομένα δεν είναι ταξινομημένα πάντα και έτσι δεν χρειάζεται να ορίσω order by στο query μου;»

Εδώ όπως πάντα άλλωστε έρχεται η γνωστή απάντηση it depends.

Η αντίδραση του συναδέλφου ήταν άμεση «Μα αφού έτσι γράφουν τα BOL».

Ναι έτσι γράφουν αλλά έχουν και κάτι ψιλά γράμματα…..

Για να μην πλατειάζω πήγα στο server για να δω τι συμβαίνει. Μου δείχνει ότι ήταν να μου δείξει και το επόμενο βήμα μου ήταν βάλω να δω στο συγκεκριμένο query το execution plan.

Και ω τι έκπληξη parallel execution!!! Τίποτα καινούργιο και απόλυτα αναμενόμενο!!!

Έχει αναφερθεί εδώ και χρόνια από τον άνθρωπο (Conor Cunningham) που φτιάχνει τον query optimizer στον SQL Server με την φράση «If you need order in your query results, put in an ORDER BY. It's that simple. Anything else is like riding in a car without a seatbelt» που κλείνει το blog post (No Seatbelt - Expecting Order without ORDER BY) του στο οποίο εξηγεί το λόγο στην απορία και του δικού μου συναδέλφου.
